Horse trekking in Khuvsgul lake and Taiga

A 13-days self-sufficient ride, from the banks of Lake Khovsgol to the taiga in the extreme North Mongolia, where Dukhans, traditional reindeer breeders live. A ride for the skilled horsemen/women who want to live a wild, natural adventure in exceptional landscapes made of lakes, steppes, mountains ans forests. Stuffs will be a guide and a cook and a local horseman. This a trek is the most adventurous horse trekking in Mongolia and designed for more experienced riders who are comfortable ride over steep and difficult terrain, the trek will pass through the big mountain pass and spectacular forest and meadows.

Khuvsgul lake is known as Asian blue pearl. It is 1645 m above the sea level, 136 km long and 262 m deep. It is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, and holds almost 70% of Mongolia's fresh water and 0.4% of all the fresh water in the world. The lake formed about 7 million years ago, it is connected under the Baikal Lake. Over 46 streams pour into Khuvsgul Lake, occupy for 1% of the fresh water, 12 species of fish, 4 large islands, and 70 percent of the lake is more than 100 m deep, clear water reaches 24 m. By the end of the November, water freezes completely 1 m thick ice. Surrounded by high mountains which is 3000-3200 m high Khuvsgul Lake has a legend about lifted for “sea”. There is a legend about how Khuvsgul as known as ocean. Taiga is 960 km northwest of Ulaanbaatar in the Tsagaannuur soum of Khuvsgul province.

A remarkable nomadic people called the Dukha (Tsataan by outsiders). They are reindeer breeding nomads. They live in summer in the high taiga forest zones – approx 2000 meters above sea level – in the East Sayan Mountains along the Russian/Mongolian border with Tuva. In the winter they come down to the valleys.

Day1. Arrival in Ulaanbaatar and Pick you up
Day2. Drive to Amarbayasgalant monastery.
Day3. Khuvshul province.
Day4. Murun city and Khuvsgul lake.
Day5. Start horseback riding
Day6. Hordiliin Shar Ovor

Day8. Arsain Sair

Day12-13. Head back to Ulaanbaatar

Day1. Arrival in Ulaanbaatar and Pick you up
Pick you up from the hotel or airport. Head to Northern Mongolia.
Day2. Drive to Amarbayasgalant monastery.
On our way we will visit to Amarbayasgalant monastery. Amarbayasgalant is famous for its architectural complexity. It was built without any nails, and used only materials provided by the mountains. Built in 1727-1736.
Day3. Khuvshul province.
We will drive past Erdene city, the second biggest city in Mongolia and head towards Bulgan province, famous for its natural landscape as well as historical monuments from the Turkic and Uigar periods. We will visit nomadic families on our way.
Day4. Murun city and Khuvsgul lake.
Arrive at Murun city. Murun city is the capital of Khuvsgul province, as well as the biggest city in northern Mongolia. Enjoy the Asian blue pearl and meet nomadic families and taste traditional food and cuisine.
Day5. Start horseback riding
We ride along the Southern bank of the Lake Khovsgol, Yamaat Uul and Ikh Uul (2961m). We will ride up to pass of Jankhai, trails goes to upland and sleep overnight in Yamaat Uul and Ikh Uul where some Ibex and wild sheep live.
Day6. Hordiliin Shar Ovor
Renchinlkhumbe Sum Today we will ride through Horidol Sardigiin Nuruu mountain range which 30km along the western shore the peaks are Qngoloch, Hevertseg, Ikh Uul and Uran Dosh Mountain(2793m), the landscape is clear evidence of glaciations; steep sided valleys; cirques and moraines.
Day7. Renchinlkhumbe Sum
This day we will re-supply our foods from Renchinlkhumbe village, the village located in Darhad Depresstion, the region is the strong center of Shamanism. We will ride towards to Arsain Sair and background is barren rock formation of upland and we will need to across Arsain Gol small river at least twice.
Day8. Arsain Sair
Har Us Continue on horseback to Jigleg Pass, the pass is 2500m above sea level, very muddy even after a long dry spell, from top of the pass you will see the wonderful scenery of Lake Hovsgol. Most travelers heading further into the taiga for visit Tsaatan family, will pass through this the pass. Sleep over night near Khar Us( spring)the mineral spring is famous throughout Mongolia for it’s medicinal properties.
Day9. Har-Us
Hirvisteg Nuur Full day of trekking along the lake’s shore and pass Santiin Davaa, terrain is difficult. On the way near to Hirvisteg Nuur( a small lake)there are few nomadic Tsaatan people( reindeer people) who live in the tepees where opportunities to ride reindeer and take the photos and visit to Tsaatan family.
Day10. Ride back
we will ride back to Jankhai along the lake side, there are 2793 m high mount Uran Dosh is the prominent flat-top mountain that dominates the western side of shore landscape.
Day11. Relaxing
After long trek, relaxing and enjoy beauty of the lake at the camp.
Day12-13. Head back to Ulaanbaatar
Drive back to Ulaanbaatar.
